Script consultancy & other monkey business

With over thirty years experience across theatre, radio and TV, as outlined across the pages of this blog, I also offer a broad range of teaching, mentoring and script consultancy services.

As well as working with the third year acting students at The Arden Theatre School in Manchester directing large scale productions such as Better Times by Barrie Keeffe and Saturday Night & Sunday Morning by Alan Sillitoe, I have tutored students at Manchester Metropolitan University for the Carleton Hobbs Radio Acting Bursary, and co-devised and run a first year ‘Writing For Performance’ module for Manchester University Drama Department. I’m also a regular participant in the  Manchester University gold mentor scheme, offering counselling and advice to undergraduates wanting to target their final year towards a career in dramatic media. I also offer one-off lectures/workshops in TV Continuing Drama, Directing, Radio Writing, Production and Acting, plus many aspects of script and story development.  Most recently I have taught at Liverpool John Moores University; Northumbria University; on the sorely missed Leicester De Montfort University MA in TV Scriptwriting; and in the past at Manchester and Salford Universities plus a variety of schools, colleges and writers groups over the years – including for Script Yorkshire and the BBC Writers Room North.

You don’t always know where – or if – such teaching escapades are going to land, so I was thrilled recently when a gang of students from the Manchester University Drama Department, who I had taught back in the autumn of 2015, got in touch to let me know that they had transformed the seven minute writing exercise I had set them, into a full length play. And a very good job they had made of it too.

Most recently I have been a regular, co-running TV script-editing workshops with Tim Stimpson for the BBC Academy, as well as mentoring writers for the BBC Writers Room Northern Voices scheme.

If, however, you are an aspiring or developing writer in search of one-to-one script consultancy, then (commitments allowing), I am happy to offer a script reading and feedback service on individual projects, the exact nature of which is always open to negotiation.

Lastly, as a broadcaster, I have contributed to many programmes both reviewing film, theatre and TV and also commentating on developments in TV and Radio drama for programmes such as Kaleidoscope, Mediumwave, The Message, Woman’s Hour and Front Row. I’m also a semi regular contributor and reviewer for  the magnificent Sci-Fi Bulletin website.
